why united queerdom?
our community, United Queerdom, takes its name and inspiration from the book "United Queerdom" by Dan Glass. This profound work captures the essence of queer spaces and their vital importance in the fight for rights and acceptance. In his words, 'We are usually in non-queer spaces, like most freakin' hours of the day, and people say "Oh you can get married now...so why do you still need a gay bar?" Like, as if we would have even come close to having gay marriage if we didn't have queer spaces to start with, where we can come together and talk and organise how to fight for things.' This poignant sentiment underscores the very reason for our existence, highlighting the ongoing need for spaces where LGBTQ+ individuals can connect, celebrate, and continue the struggle for equality.
